Tree sparrows need your help!

We recently saw the local extinction of another Manx farmland bird, the Yellowhammer and MWT are determined not to see it happen again to the Tree Sparrow.

We believe this little bird is the most threatened of all our Island's birds and we are carrying out urgent conservation action to save it!

To help this species we are supplying food sources around certain areas of the Island and installing specific Tree Sparrow nest boxes to give them security through the breeding season.

We're also launching a new citizen science project to monitor the populations and movements of this species.

Every £6000 we raise will fund a farmland bird officer for a day a week for a year to support the protection and creation of nesting, resting and food sources for the Tree sparrow across the Manx Countryside.

All species are interconnected so when we focus on one species, we create a ripple of benefits to support biodiversity across the whole Island.

What can you do?

Here are some easy things you can do to help Tree sparrows at home:

  • Report any sightings of Tree Sparrow to robert@mwt.im
  • Have suitable Tree Sparrow nest box in your garden or on your property. (Make sure the hole is no bigger than 28mm)
  • Feed a seed mix which includes white millet
  • Plant invertebrate rich vegetation throughout the breeding season to help feed the young Tree Sparrows
  • Leave areas of scrub/weeds around your property
  • Plant hedges to provide shelter and protection

You can also donate and support the position of Farmland Bird Officer at MWT, which is helping to protect some of our most threatened farmland bird species.
