State of Nature 2024 - Objectives

The objectives of the Manx State of Nature 2024 are:

  • To build a constructive picture of Manx nature, exploring causes of decline, or successes where positive action has been taken
  • to make recommendations based on the best available evidence to aid nature’s recovery
  • to inform a long-term strategic and integrated approach to conservation in the Isle of Man, through partnership work, potentially influencing internal delivery planning.
  • to identify the level of evidence available whilst exposing areas where data is insufficient.

Our current state of nature is unknown. Although data exists across many of our species, from multiple Government and private organisations, conservation partners and credible amateur sources, for much of our native wildlife, the data is sporadic at best and a full report across all of our natural environment has not previously been published.

It is hoped that this report will identify the ‘gaps’ in our data and assist in the establishment of an accurate baseline across all our species and habitats, which is the imperative first step towards the identification of the extent of the impact of our known and unknown, past, present and future environmental issues within our biosphere. If we do not make significant and timely efforts to gain this missing information, we have the potential to lose even more species before we even know we have them.
